Fashion and shopping is the same, right? Well, not so much according to writer, Jania Becerra, who wrote on Substack, “If you’re not a student of politics, art, history or environment then you’re not interested in fashion. You just like shopping.” (@janiabecerra) That sparked my interest immediately! What is fashion? What has politics go to do with it? How can I tell I just like shopping and not the art of fashion? Well let’s answer some of those questions today!
What is the definition of fashion?
noun. a style that is popular at a particular time, especially in clothes, hair, makeup, etc.
Now let’s look at the etymology of the word ‘fashion’:
The French word for fashion is “mode.” It first appeared in 1482 to mean “a collective way of dressing”. The term is rooted in the Latin word modus (which means ‘manner, measure’). Then came about the French word “façon” (meaning ‘way, manner’) which eventually led to the English translation: fashion.
So what is fashion’s connection to politics and history?
